■I will explain the requirements for ordinary naturalization.
- Continuously have a residence in Japan for more than 5 years.
・As a general rule, it is necessary to have had an address in Japan for over five years and to
have been employed in Japan for over three years.
・If you leave the country for more than three months on a single overseas trip, it will reset,
and from that point, a stay of more than five years will be required.
・If you have spent a total of more than six months abroad in a year, your stay is reset, and
from that point, a stay of more than five years will be required. - Being 18 years or older and having legal capacity under the laws of your home country.
・If you are under 18 years old, you cannot apply for naturalization.
However, even those who have not reached 18 years of age can apply for naturalization if
done together with their parents.
・A person who is not recognized as an adult under the laws of their home country cannot
apply for naturalization on their own, even if they are over 18 years old. - To have good conduct
① Fulfilling one’s tax obligations
② Being enrolled in the pension system and making regular contributions
③ Not having committed any traffic violations
※Have not repeatedly committed traffic violations (fines) within the past five years
※Not having committed serious violations such as personal injury accidents, speeding, or
drunk driving
※Not having had your license suspended or revoked.
Even if you have violated these, it is acceptable once certain conditions are met or a certain period has passed.
④ Not having committed any crimes
※Cases where fines were imposed for assault, theft, or injury.
Even if you commit these, it’s okay as long as certain conditions are met or a certain
period passes.
⑤ That there has been no violation of laws and regulations
※During the tax return filing, I deliberately underreported my income and was subjected
to additional taxation.
※Excessively claim family members as dependents
※It is okay once the violation is resolved and the taxes that should have originally been
imposed are paid. - Being able to make a living using the assets or skills of oneself, one’s spouse, or other
relatives who share the same livelihood.
※It is important to be able to lead a stable life.
It is acceptable even if it is not the applicant themselves, as long as their spouse or
relatives who share the household are working or there is a stable income such as rental income. - Not having a nationality, or losing one’s nationality as a result of acquiring Japanese nationality
※Japan, in principle, does not recognize dual citizenship. - Since the day of the enforcement of the Constitution of Japan, they have never plotted or
advocated the destruction of the Constitution of Japan or the government established
under it by violence, nor have they formed or joined any political party or other
organization that has plotted or advocated such acts.
However, taking into account the possibility that there may be countries that do not allow
their nationals to renounce their citizenship of their own free will, in the case of
naturalization applications from persons holding the nationality of such countries, there
may be instances where the possibility of losing their original nationality as mentioned in
point 5 above is not required depending on the circumstances.
